The concept of The Gardens came about as part of my commitment to educating people about the importance of a balanced diet and lifestyle. I will be sharing information about various topics that hopefully resonate and inspire you to move a bit closer to optimal wellness.
Much of our nutritional education comes from television commercials and product packaging… where the main goal is to get us to fork over our dollars.
One day, we hear a report done on a study – “scientists at XYZ have discovered that coffee gives you the ability to turn everything to gold” WOO HOO – BREAK OUT THE KEURIG – WE’RE GONNA BE FILTHY RICH!! … and then sadly, the next day we hear “scientists at ABC have released a study finding a link between coffee and Frankenstein’s monster”. (disclaimer: these aren’t real scientific results – they may or may not be true, but I can’t back them up)
What are we supposed to believe?
Eating right can be confusing, and often, it’s intimidating enough that we don’t even bother trying to do the right thing. It’s so much easier to buy the low-fat foods that are fortified with vitamins and minerals, and feel like we are doing the right thing.
But if you listen carefully, your body is sending you messages, in the form of headaches, joint pain, cravings, fatigue, irritability, and more…
Food, movement, sleep and stress – they are all important factors in a healthy life. When any one of these is not functioning the way it should, there is potential for disease.
It is often a simple modification that can make a world of difference.
Try this today:
• Add one vegetable to your day (sorry fries don’t count)
• carve out 10 minute to walk around the block (I know, its cold and wet, or blustery, but do it – its invigorating)
• going to bed a little earlier tonight
• where you are, close your eyes and focus on your breath for a minute
My goal is to help you rebalance these pieces of your life and have some fun too!
I want to share one of my favourite beverages. I use it when I am on the wrong side of my complicated relationship with coffee…and really who hasn’t been there?
It has health promoting benefits for your body – and in a society where much of the food that we consume is actually harming us and decreasing our quality of life (remember that migraineyou had yesterday? How well are you sleeping? Are you exhausted?), its nice to know that we can do something positive for ourselves.
I want to introduce you to a world of amazing superfoods. Don’t worry, we’ll do it slowly, and you will read the rewards of being kind to your body.
Even though this recipe (see below) has a tablespoon of coconut sugar, this drink is not very sweet – if you prefer, you could add a LITTLE more coconut sugar, or some raw honey (we’ll discuss sugar and sweeteners, don’t worry!). This drink is warming, full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and hormone balancing.
• Coconut Sugar is very low on the glycemic index, so you can drink this without a sugar crash in an hour.
• Maca Root is an amazing adaptogen that helps to regulate hormone function, and considering that hormones rule pretty much everything in every persons body, this is vitally important.
• Turmeric – a powerful antioxidant (fights cancer causing free radicals), and anti-inflammatory.
I caution you – use SMALL amounts of any ingredient that is new to you – this is to avoid any adverse reaction, and sometimes the taste takes a bit to get used to. These ingredients are too important to be frightened away from.

1 CUP ALMOND MILK
1 CUP OF WATER
2 TBSP COCONUT SUGAR1 TBSP RAW CACAO POWDER
1 TSP RAW MACA POWDER
1/2 TSP CINNAMON
1/8 TSP GROUND TURMERIC
1/8 TSP GROUND GINGER
PINCH OF BLACK PEPPER
PINCH OF SEA SALT
Gently warm the almond milk and water in a saucepan. Transfer to a blender and blend until frothy. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top. Sip and enjoy!
